Our Journey:
The Madrasa Tadrees-ul-Quran, an Islamic Union school located in Hong Kong’s Kowloon Bay area, was established in 2011 by Qari Muhammad Sher Zaman. At that time, the Muslim population in the neighborhood was comparatively high, yet there were no mosques or schools nearby. Muslims had to pray at home, and many commuted from various places for work, facing difficulties in performing prayers, especially the Friday congregation.
Concerned Muslims wished for an organized facility to educate their children in Islamic teachings and upbringing. Several attempts to establish a mosque or school through Islamic organizations were initially unsuccessful. Eventually, after observing the community’s needs, Qari Muhammad Sher Zaman rented a small shop and formally registered it with the government. This initiative aimed to establish a stronghold of Islam in this area, ensuring the preservation of faith for current and future generations.
Upon seeing this effort, local Muslims became hopeful. Initially, prayer attendance improved, and soon, they requested Qari Muhammad Sher Zaman to start Quranic education and religious upbringing for their children. At that time, Qari Sahab worked as a laborer, earning a living by day and serving as a night watchman. Eventually, he left his daytime job to focus on educating the children.
As the number of students rapidly increased, necessitating more time for effective education, financial difficulties arose. Most operations were sustained through loans, but with the commencement of regular congregational prayers and Friday prayers, the situation improved. Qari Sahab began devoting full-time to the madrasa, significantly enhancing students’ religious education. Over time, students completed memorization of the Quran, and Quranic studies intensified.
Due to space constraints, Qari Sahab initially taught girls at his home. As their numbers grew, he rented a separate place in 2018, with substantial support from his wife. Currently, the total number of students is around 200 across separate schools for boys and girls. The boys’ school has three teachers offering courses in Quranic recitation, memorization, translation and interpretation, and Islamic studies, including Hadith. The girls’ school, with four teachers, offers similar courses along with a formal educational curriculum.
Alhamdulillah, nearly 300 students have completed memorization of the Quran, and about 50 have fully memorized and mastered its recitation. The madrasa has also started regular academic classes, marking a new phase in its educational journey.
The initiative led by Qari Muhammad Sher Zaman Sahib transformed the community, providing essential religious education and fostering a strong Islamic environment. With dedicated efforts, the schools continue to expand, nurturing future generations in Islamic knowledge and values, despite initial challenges and financial constraints.
